There was hardly a dry eye or body at Woollett, Jr. swim complex as Bonita celebrated its first CIF water polo championship since 2005, as the Bearcats dunked Pasadena Poly 5-2. After the defensive gem, coaches John Ashby, Greg Meek, Greg Hart and Julia Fancher were in the pool celebrating with their special cast of CIF champions.
Goalie Caleb Guarino was his usually stingy self, giving up just two goals for the entire game, including a 23-minute, 16-second stretch where he allowed absolutely nothing to enter the net.
Alex Munson scored first for Bonita, and after Poly tied it, Bonita’s Keaton Renta scored at the quarter-ending buzzer on an assist from Kevin Webb to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead.
Bonita went on to score three fast-break goals in the second quarter to push the lead to 5-1. Although Bonita was shut out in the final two quarters, it held Poly to a single goal late in the fourth quarter.
Then everyone was in the pool, enjoying the water. The drought was over!
Now roll the photos, captured by Tom Lines and Paul and Suzana Munson.
