The Bonita varsity volleyball team ran its league record to 9-0 on an emotional night when its thoughts were actually more with those fighting breast cancer and those who have lost the good fight and are now in its memories.
“There were a lot of distractions, but they were good distractions,” said head coach Adriana Contreras, who saw her team defeat a determined Walnut squad in four sets, 25-23, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-17, and more importantly, help raise an estimated $2,000, which the team will donate to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Over the four games, Victoria Dennis led Bonita with 18 kills and Kaitlyn White delivered 9 stuffs. Bonita also received sharp service games from Danielle Lines in the first game and librero Melissa Katherman and Kassandra Mejia in the second set. In the fourth and final set, sophomore Sarah Bruchet also played well to tip the night in Bonita’s favor.
The match was more a celebration about pink and those impacted by breast cancer than about an athletic contest. The players came out in pink uniforms and the fans were just as colorful in their support of the Bonita team.
Next Tuesday, Nov. 1, post the Dig Pink cancer event and post Halloween, Bonita will travel to Diamond Bar, which will be looking to avenge a tough 3-2 loss on Oct. 6, when the Bearcats rallied from a 2-0 deficit to pull off the season’s most thrilling victory.
Our thanks again to photographer Tom Lines for capturing the moments and spirt of the Dig Pink event at Bonita.
