Each year, the PTA Reflections Program challenges students to create art inspired by a specific theme, and students submit entries to a local PTA or PTSA. Nationally, the program has six arts areas—dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts.

This year’s theme was “Diversity means.”

Julie Prager, served as the program coordinator at Grace Miller Elementary School in La Verne, which received 35 submissions from students.

“This is more than we ever had,’” Julie said. “That’s important because art is being taken out of the classrooms. It gives parents an opportunity to work with their children at home.”

Indeed, the entries were truly diverse. Students depicted diversity, showing different kinds of people, candy, dinosaurs, animals and even parts of the waste cycle.

The contest comprised two divisions: Kindergarten through the second grade, and third through the fifth grade. Students competed in three categories: the visual arts, photography and literature.

“My favorite part is when the art starts coming in, and I get to what they’ve created,” Julie said. “It’s a great program.”

Students were informed at the start of the school year to submit artwork for the Reflections Program. Julie invited a cross-section of  judges to evaluate the artwork. The winning Grace Miller entries will be announced at the school’s Harvest Festival on Oct. 27, and then advance to the district competition.
