Freshman Nikki Wheatley didn't take her eye off the ball once, as she had several steals to go with her 14 points.

Yes, I know it’s hard to believe, but a Bearcat is faster than a Jaguar. The proof is in Bonita’s commanding 77-38 win over the Jurupa Jaguars at Bonita on a rainy Saturday night.

After trailing 3-2, the Bonita girls were scoring faster than a teenage girl can say, “I love you, Justin Bieber.” It was Brianna Kennedy on a putback for 2, Nikki Wheatley on a steal and a layup for 2, Madison Zylstra for 3, Wheatley on a plus one, and on and on it went to the delight of the Bearcat nation.

To end the period, Bonita went on an amazing 28-1. I hadn’t seen speed like that since I went to watch greyhounds run at Caliente race track in my youth.

For the quarter, Zylstra had 13, including three of four from behind the arc; Kennedy had 8; Wheatley had 7; and Loyola University-bound Taylor Anderson had 2. The only thing that might have slowed the Bearcats down is if they had played the game outside in the rain.

The Jags tried to run with the Bearcats, and the Jags got run out of the building.

“Unlike the start of our last game, we were focused from beginning to end,” said Bonita head coach Darren Baumunk “We were ready to play since our shootaround this morning. In fact, we were mentally focused and ready to go since yesterday.”

At the half, the score was 49-18, and the only way Bonita could have lost is if the scoreboard had malfunctioned, and as far as we know, Janet Jackson wasn’t in the building.

After point guard Wheatley took a spill, Baumunk pulled his talented starters, figuring that only fate, not lack of talent, can derail the Bearcats’ playoff run. “I didn’t want any fluke accidents with us ahead like that,” Baumunk said.

The starters heading to the bench, however, provided little relief for the Jags. Sarah Jackson and a host of the Bearcats didn’t miss a beat as Bonita coasted to the easy victory, with Jackson chipping in 8 points and making the most of her moments on the court.
