How cold were the Bonita girls to start the first game of the CIF playoffs?

  • They were colder than the day Richard Simmons was last seen wearing pants.
  • They were colder than that one day lawyers had their hands in their own pockets.
  • They were colder than the day police told a suspect to freeze – and he did.

Several factors could have contributed to the cold start, head coach Darren Baumunk said. Bonita hadn’t played a game in about a week, the starting line-up was shuffled, and it was the first game of the playoffs.

“Anything can happen in the playoffs,” said Baumunk. “It was kind of first-round nerves and Palm Springs came out on fire.”

Finally starting to thaw out, the lady Bearcats took their first lead, 9-8, and clung to a 14-13 lead at the end of the first period. However, once Bonita turned on all the burners, it was no contest as the Bearcats rolled to a 71-38 victory.

Helping the Bearcats heat up were Madison Zylstra who finished with a game-high 20 points and Taylor Anderson with 16 points.

In the second quarter, the Indians led 16-14 before the Bearcats put together an 11-0 run to lead 25-16, with Zlystra sizzling from the 3-point line. She poured in 11 second-quarter points.

With the win, Bonita’s season record is now 25-2. More important, the Bearcats have a second-round berth in the playoffs. On Saturday the team will host Jurupa Valley.

Bonita scoring: Madison Zylstra 20, Taylor Anderson 16, Natalie Reyes 7, Jacklyn Smith 6, Stephanie Vana 5, Brianna Kennedy 5, Nikki Wheatley 4, Reyna Sierra 4, Erin Hastings 2, Jacki Loy 1, Stephanie Herra 1.
