Wearing huge target on its back as La Verne Little League’s only undefeated team, the Chicago White piled up 18 hits, including two home runs, to defeat the New York Yankees, 19-9, in a game full of offensive fireworks.

The Yankees struck first on an RBI single by Jacob Wollard, who also came around to score for an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, the White Sox responded with four runs courtesy of a 2-run single by Andrew Berdugo and a two-run fence-clearing blast by Logan Zylstra on a first-pitch fastball.

The Yankees, however, weren’t done. In the top of the second, the Bronx Bombers collected four hits and a pair of walks to score five runs. Brandon DeLaCruz led off with a double and after Judd Gomez and Tyler Talavera walked to load the bases, lead-off hitter Christian McGhee singled home two runs. In the inning, Kevin Sizemore also had an RBI single and Wollard delivered an RBI double.

Suddenly trailing 7-4, the White Sox responded as they have all season with a five-run inning of their own to regain the lead, 9-7. The White Sox led off the inning with three straight hits, including singles from Zylstra and Shane Lohr and a double from Matt Diamond. Later in the inning, Will Guerra cracked a one-run double and Berdugo stroked a one-run double. In all, Chicago sent nine batters to the plate.

The White Sox continued to roll through the third and fourth innings, scoring nine more runs. Nick Lodolo belted a three-run homer in the third and a one-run double in the fourth. Cameron Muyres, who came into pitch in the second, stroked a pair of singles while Guerra laced a single and a one-run double.

Still, the Yankees battled back. In the top of the fourth, the Bombers scored two more runs on solo homers by McGhee and Wollard to edge closer, 13-9, before the White Sox pounded home five runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to pull away for the 19-9 victory.

Three-hit stars for the White Sox on the cool, but not uncomfortable, night at Pelota Park were Muyres, Lodolo and Guerra. Picking up a pair of hits each were Cole Sojka, Berdugo and Zylstra. Off the bench, Tadd Sanchez also delivered a key double.

For the Yankees, McGhee and Wollard smashed three hits apiece and Kevin Sizemore had a pair.

The White Sox survived an early scare against the hard-hitting Yankees, but the South Siders finally prevailed as they have all season, moving one game closer to a perfect season.

“Each game gets tougher and tougher,” said head coach Lodolo. “That target on our back is getting bigger and bigger.”
