Mier has made the leap to the Lancaster JetHawks.

What a month for former Bonita High School shortstop Jiovanni Mier, class of 2009.

In early June, the 6-foot-2 slick-fielding shortstop of the Lexington Legends was named to the South Atlantic Southern Division All-Star team. Then Mier learned he was being promoted to the Lancaster JetHawks of the California Leauge.

The good news for local baseball fans following the career of the Houston Astros’ No. 1 draft choice in 2009 is they can now follow his rise through the minor league ranks much more closely.

When contacted about his promotion and return to Southern California, Mier said, “Man, news travels fast!”

Starting tonight, fans can catch Mier in action over the next four days as the JetHawks begin a four-games series against the Quakes in Rancho Cucamonga. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday contests start at 7:05 p.m. Sunday’s game is a matinee, starting at 2:05 p.m.

With the Legends, Mier hit .245 and slugged five home runs. He was also named Lexington’s defensive player of the month for April by the Astros’ player development department.
