The La Verne Girls Softball Association is loaded with all-stars, but perhaps the brightest of them all yesterday at Louie Pompei Sports Park in Glendora was Joanna Chan who tripled twice and singled in four at-bats while leading her 10U team to a 9-0 shut-out over Palos Verdes on Saturday.
She led off the game by smacking a triple and came in to score on a ground-out by Michelle Boulware and the La Verne girls never looked back, scoring two runs in the first, two in the second, four in the third inning and a final run in the fourth to give pitcher Jazmine Blizzard more than enough runs to earn the shutout victory.
Other hitting stars for La Verne were Riley Moreno with a pair of singles, Kayla (pictured) with a bare of base-knocks and mighty Mia also with a set of singles to go along with her two RBIs.
It was a complete performance for the 10U girls. Joanna and Serena also each made dazzling catches in the field to help secure the victory.
The La Verne girls’ best inning was the third when Riley, Kristen Carpenter, Kayla, Kristen Alley and Mia each singled. Altogether, the girls collected 11 hits and three walks.
Meanwhile on Field 1 at Pompei Park, the 14U La Verne all-stars battled to a 3-3 tie against a tough Brea squad. The game was razor-close all the way.
Brea broke on top with a pair of singles in the bottom of the first. Bonita took the lead in the top of the second, the big blow coming on a two-out triple by Jessica Carnahan, scoring Mikayla Cirrillo and Shelbie Moore. The La Verne girls tacked on another run in the top of third on another two-out triple, this time by Brittany Griffin. She drove in Lorraine Gatlin who had walked. The La Verne girls might have gotten more but Griffin was thrown out at home trying to circle the bases.
On defense, Mikayla was solid in the circle. The girls, however, booted a couple of balls in the bottom of the third, and Brea took advantage tying up the game. At the end of three innings, the score stood at 3-3, and neither team was able to break the tie before time was called because of the Glendora tournament time limit.
The 14Us, however, will be back in action at noon on Sunday, so come out and catch a few innings to see our talented all-stars perform.
