On their home court Wednesday night, the Bonita freshman team pushed its terrific season record to 19-4 with a thrilling 51-49 win over a tenacious Rowland squad.

Although Bonita never lost the lead after tying the game 4-4 in the first quarter, Rowland would not go away. Bonita led by six points, 22-16, at the end of the first quarter, and by the same margin at the half, 38-32.

In the third quarter both teams struggled offensively. In the period, Rowland actually outscored Bonita 7-6, to trail 44-39, entering the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, both teams dialed up the defense. Rowland edged within one point, 48-47, but Bonita got a bucket from Tom Loy who converted on a three-point play under the basket to help Bonita go up, 51-47. Rowland made it 51-49 and had a shot to tie the game with seconds remaining but fell short in their upset bid.

High scorers for Bonita were Tim Trisani, with 13 points, Dane Hollar, with 9 points and Kurt Reibold with 8 points, which all came in the first half.

Mark Miller, who coaches the Bonita freshmen, said after the game that this current squad of Bearcats might be one of his best, if not the best, ever.

“They are just a very coachable and respectful group of young men,” said Miller who is assisted by Sameer Bhatt, Eddie Parra and Daniel Lai. The team won key games against Glendora, Claremont and Damien, among others.

Miller said Trisani and Dane Hollar are both outstanding players as are the Reibold twins, Kurt and Chad. Nigel Hensley is another local fans should be hearing more about. Drew Biernancki has shown great improvement, as well, and is expected to be a force down the road.

The Bonita freshmen season is almost over, but for the majority of players on the team, their Bonita careers are now just beginning.
