Ashley Maxfeldt, Adam McCreery, Taylor Anderson and Breeanna Sandoval signed national letters of intent on Wednesday at Bonita High School.

On the same day that the California State University and University of California systems announced they were hiking tuition 15 percent and 8 percent respectively next year, Bonita High School announced that four of its seniors had signed letters of intent indicating they have accepted college athletic scholarships.

Bonita’s athletic signings were Adam McCreery, Arizona State baseball; Taylor Anderson, Loyola basketball; Ashley Maxfeldt, Loyola volleyball; and Breeanna Sandoval, Cal State Bakersfield, softball.

On the same day, news also spread on campus that Eric Podley, Bonita head football coach, whose current team is 8-1, has been selected ABC7/NFL High School Coach of the Week for Southern California.

The award carries a $1,000 grant for the Bonita football program from the NFL’s Youth Football Fund. In addition an ABC7 news crew will visit the Bearcats’ campus on Wednesday, Nov. 24, to interview the award-winning coach and members of his team for a news segment that will air on Sports Zone, Saturday, Nov. 27, after the college game of the day.

“This award is not just for winning records,” said ABC7’s Michael Francis. “It honors those coaches who give to the community and help to guide young men to successful lives.”

Bonita didn’t quite grab all the spotlight. Damien baseball’s Antonio Gonzalez and Joe Chavez signed letters of intent to play for UC Riverside next year. Meanwhile, La Verne Lutheran’s C.J. Cooper will play basketball for the University of Texas at El Paso and while his teammate Bruce English will play for Loyola during the 2011-12 basketball season.

Not a bad in the neighborhood!
