grace-millerDon’t look now but Grace Miller is within striking distance of achieving its 2010-11 PTA membership goal.

“Our goal is to obtain 400 memberships school wide by Friday, Sept. 24, and we’re 90% there,” said Julie Harris, PTA President at Grace Miller Elementary School.

Leading the membership surge are PTA parents Vince and Vicky Maliszewski. “They have been working tirelessly by placing amazing colorful posters all over campus, sending home flyers and emails to our 450 students, parents and staff,” Harris added.

For the students, there’s a lot riding on the membership drive. The first three classes that meet their 100% goal will be awarded a pizza party, with none other than Principal Deanne Spencer delivering the savory pies dressed in a Domino’s delivery shirt. She’ll be assisted by the big red NOID.

Even if some students don’t end up eating pizza, they receive something even more valuable. Each year, the PTA supports many of the great programs that enrich each student at Grace Miller. The school’s 2010-2011 programs include a book for each student on his/her birthday; Scholastic magazines for students in kindergarten-2nd grade; agendas for students in grades 3rd-5th; enriching assemblies; maintaining earthquake supplies and many other benefits.

“We want every family to be represented,” said Vince. “Buying a membership enables — but does not require — you to attend monthly meetings to have a vote regarding budget issues, student program selection, and officer elections. Membership also strengthens the state and national PTA, as they work with our elected officials on decisions like proposed budget cuts, which would directly affect all our children.

“By letting our voices be heard, we show our children how much we value and support their education.”

Membership dues are only $7 for the entire year, and membership is not limited to just families with Grace Miller students. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and friends are also encouraged to join.

Although the annual Fall Festival on Thursday, Oct. 28, is more than month away, plans are already under way to make this year’s edition the best ever with a variety of game, snack and food booths.

The fun gets started at 5:30 p.m. with a costume parade and opening ceremonies at Kuns Park, next door to Grace Miller.

Because booths are awarded on a first-come, first-served,  Jennifer Deegan, PTA Fall Festival Booth Coordinator, urges everyone to get their requests in early. Please contact Jennifer at jdeegan@cvusd.k12.ca.us for more information.
