Covina Blue NOT Singing the Blues All the Way to the Colt World Series

Covina Blue plays Mexico, Aug. 7 at 5 p.m. on the opening day of the Colt World Series in West Layfayette, Ind.

After winning the region, super region and Colt West Zone Tournament, the Covina Blue All-Stars – including five Bonita High School players — will square off against Mexico on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 5 p.m. in the opening round of the Colt World Series in Lafayette, Ind.

The winners of the Red Division and White Division will meet in the championship game, Aug. 12. Covina Blue is in the White Division.

The complete Covina Blue Roster comprises the following players:

Jacob Burke, Thomas Castro, Dominique Davis, A.T. DeLaGarza, Robert Garcia, Justin Garza, Joe Gill, Tyler Heslop, David Higuera, Mitchell Johnson, Mac Lupon, Oscar Montenegro, Andre Morales, Raymond Nava, Matt Page, Richie Prieto and Jared Robinson.

The five Bonita players are Thomas Castro, Justin Garza, Tyler Heslop, Mitchell Johnson and Richie Prieto.

The team is managed by Tony Page. His coaches are Greg Santiago and Greg Johnson.

Covina Blue secured its World Series berth upon defeating Los Gatos Blue in Wednesday’s championship game of the Colt West Zone Tournament in Santa Clara, Calif.

Garza broke a 7-7 with a solo home run. Later in the inning Gill stroked a two-run single for the 10-7 victory. Los Gatos had forced the final game by defeating Covina Blue 2-1 earlier in the day.

In the semi-finals on Monday, Covina Blue routed Santa Clara 11-0, backed by the pitching of Garza who went the distance of the five-inning game (shortened by the mercy rule), striking out six while surrendering four hits. Heslop was the offensive star, blasting a three-run homer and collecting four RBIs. Davis and Higuera also had two hits apiece.
