Each Christmas the Friends of the La Verne Library donate new paperback books to the military men and women from the La Verne community. This year was no different, even in a tough economy.

It's a Wrap: From left, Marissa Carey and Natalie Carey, Independent Girl Scouts from La Verne, add a few decorative touches to each book going overseas to our men and women serving in the U.S. military.

George May from the La Verne Library delivered 247 books that were purchased through generous donations from the Friends of the La Verne Library. Local independent girl scouts arrived at the La Verne Community Center after school to wrap and box all of the books. The books were sent to various La Verne military members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“This is a wonderful program that is only made possible by generous community members,” said Bill Aguirre, Parks & Community Services Director for the City of La Verne. “We have received so many positive comments from military families about the book program at Christmas and the Girl Scout cookies in the spring. This is a very supportive community no matter what the economy is doing.”
