Don’t think of Allie LaPierre as just a top Bonita senior volleyball player headed to UCLA next year; she’s also spearheading Bonita’s participation in “Dig Pink,” a nationwide rally in October to raise awareness and funds to help eradicate breast cancer.
This past summer while LaPierre was at a UCLA volleyball camp, she learned about the event involving hundreds of high school and college matches across the country. Bonita has circled Oct. 20 on the calendar, its home game against Walnut, as its primary Dig Pink event.
“When I first learned about this event, I got really excited,” LaPierre said. “I thought it would be really cool if Bonita could become involved and hopefully make this a tradition.
“Our goal is to raise awareness and help find a cure for breast cancer, which is a disease that is affecting so many lives,” LaPierre added. “Almost everyone has been touched by this terrible disease in some way.”
While details are still being worked out for Bonita’s Dig Pink event, LaPierre said supporters will have opportunities to purchase “pink” volleyballs and participate in other promotions.
To make a contribution, supporters can also visit Bonita’s Dig Pink page at https://www.side-out.org/application/teams/team_page/1368. The Bonita volleyball team has a fundraising goal of $500. The national goal is $700,000.
“We are excited to be part of the Side-Out Foundation and the Dig Pink campaign,” LaPierre said. “The players, coaches, parents, volunteers, spectators and survivors will be in for a special day. Come prepared for some great matches, give whatever you can, and make sure to wear pink.”
