0202Keeping its championship hopes alive, the La Verne Little League 11-year-old all-star team defeated Glendora American 12-9 at Merchant Park in San Dimas, Monday, July 6.

After taking early leads of 4-0 and 5-1, La Verne had to withstand a furious Glendora American seven-run rally that gave the Americans a temporary 8-5 lead. To its credit, La Verne battled back, regaining the lead, 11-8, before closing out the game, 12-9.

There were several hitting starts for La Verne. Sam Monsen clobbered a grand slam and 2-run home run. Alex Gonzalez ripped a pair of doubles. Brogan White was perfect on the night with a double, single and two walks.

White also pitched the first 3 2/3 innings before giving way to Nick Lodolo who kept Glendora American at bay the rest of the way.

“Last night was a big win,” said Manager Brian Shively. “Everyone chipped in either on offense or defense.”

With the victory, La Verne is headed for a July 8 rematch with San Dimas, which defeated La Verne 14-3 last Friday. Wednesday’s game starts at 5:30 p.m.

“Hopefully, we will take them to the ‘if’ game so we can win this tournament,” Shively said “One game at a time. And last night was the first step towards our goal!”
