First, St. John’s Episcopal Church of La Verne, under the leadership of Mother Kelli Grace Kurtz, is expanding its food donation program to benefit the Inland Valley Hope Partners food bank next week. As of Tuesday, May 19, St. John’s will receive food item donations from local citizens and transport them to the food bank. Previously, St. John’s had collected food from within its congregation. The urgent need for food many people are experiencing in this down economy has prompted St. John’s to take a new step toward growth in its outreach program. Please take donations of non-perishable items to the narthex (lobby) of St. John’s.
Second, the youth of St. John’s La Verne are planning the last details of their mission trip to New Orleans this June. They will be working with the Diocese of Louisiana’s Office of Disaster Response http://odr.edola.org to aid in post-Katrina rebuilding efforts. Specifically, they will be working in the Ninth Ward on All Souls’ Church, which is meeting in an old Walgreen’s Drugstore. They will also be working on parishioners’ homes. The youth have raised funds, learned about mission trips and are praying for and with the people of New Orleans. There are 13 high school youth and young adult mentors who will be going.
One of St. John’s young adult mentors, Caralie Kennedy, has been doing an external internship as part of her coursework for a degree in Human Resources from Cal State Fullerton. Her main project has been organizing the mission trip.
