Overheard …
A St. Louis Cardinal baseball scout was impressed by the early-season offensive display put on by Bonita senior Jason Plowman, who was named MVP of the Glendora Baseball Tournament in March… No matter how many times you sit at the bar inside the Pizza Barn in La Verne, you’ll chuckle every time you see the sign, “Helen Waite is our credit manager. If you want credit, go to Helen Waite.” Bumped into Breonna Storrs at Electric Tan near L.A. Fitness. Although I didn’t get the body wrap this time, I did learn that the 2006 Bonita graduate and current Cal Poly PR major (class of 2010) will be interning with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this summer in their Public Relations Department. With her current tan, she’ll fit in perfectly with the O.C. Halo crowd. Travis Marshall, 2008 Bonita grad, couldn’t wait until the summer to intern. Although only a freshman, the wunderkind is already working for Santa Monica-based Artificial Life America, Inc., in its Research and Game Development Department. Artificial Life, a pioneer in broadband mobile technology, is the world’s first full-service broadband mobile content and technology provider. Its services include mobile games, mobile advertisement and product placements, mobile business applications and other mobile technologies. Though just a freshman at ULV, Travis is encountering some big-league, real-world traffic jams to and from Santa Monica, but might have the best playlist of songs in La Verne, so he’s in a good, happy groove. He’s a business/computer science manager at ULV. And there’s hope for the rest of us. He found his job on Craigslist. Happy to report that Tanner Zylstra, all 220 pounds, made it as a walk-on with Brigham Young University’s football team. The BYU coaching staff wants the ex-Bonita two-way athletic star (class of 2008) to bulk up to 240 pounds, so perhaps he’ll have to make a stop at La Verne’s The Corner Butcher Stop the next time he’s in town. Go Tanner! By the way, in a couple of weeks, Dave and Maxine Zylstra we’ll be heading way down under to New Zealand to visit son Brock (not Barack like the president), who’s been serving his Mormon mission there. Brock’s name, of course, hangs high aloft the Bonita gym, where he became the Bearcats’ all-time leading scorer. Another Bonita athletic star Mike MacDonald (class of 2006), now a business major at ULV, broke his ankle during a recent pick-up basketball game at L.A. Fitness. His road back is a three-month rehab process. Although Mighty Mac is supposed to have his pins taken out the same week as the Coachella Music Festival in Indio (April 17-19), he vows that he will be in the crowd welcoming such incredible headliners as Paul McCartney, The Cure, The Killers, and performances by over 120 other acts in what could be Coachella’s best lineup ever. La Verne’s spring/summer Farmer’s Market, got under way Thursday, April 2. Open every Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Market features fresh produce, flowers, craft vendors, live entertainment, a variety of tasty food offerings, children’s rides, pony rides, and a petting zoo. Among the highlights, look for an expanded selection of fruits and vegetables. Now, with so much nutritious food around, no one has an excuse for eating poorly. This year’s Market will also feature more local entertainment and youth participation. The Cool Cruise Classic Car Show also returns to old town, April 11. More than 900 classic vehicles will be on display. Throw in some classic rock from The Answer, and you have the makings for one of the biggest days on the La Verne calendar. Oh, what the heck, here’s one more live bit. My oldest son Ryan’s (Bonita class of 2002, UCSB grad 2006) girlfriend Shannon Strametz (UCSB 2008 grad) was working at the Byron and Tracey Salon in Beverly Hills when Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie and Charlie’s Angel hottie Cameron Diaz came in for some beauty treatments. On the way out, Cameron tipped Shannon $50 for staying late. Look for some of Shannon’s fashion blogs to appear on LaVerneOnline’s pages this spring. The only thing that could have made the experience better was if La Verne’s Jessica Alba had also made an appearance.
