In a massive display of “Girl Power,” more than 300 Daisies, Brownies, and Girl Scout Juniors, Cadets and Seniors overran San Dimas Canyon Regional Park on Sunday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America, founded on March 12, 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low.
Standing side by side, the girls from the Bonita Neighborhood (Service Unit) formed a human “100” to honor the occasion before completing various activities to earn their Centennial of Scouting Patch. Girls, for example, had to complete 100 Hula Hoop revolutions and blow 100 bubbles.
There are about 330 registered Girl Scouts in the Bonita Neighborhood, all of whom are extremely active in making their community a better place to live and work.
“Right now the girls in our troop are busy coordinating the creation of a cookbook commemorating the 100th anniversary,” said Anne-Marie L. Larrabure. Funds raised will go to support a scholarship.
“Each troop is also working on 100 thank-you cards to send to Operation Gratitude for the military, added Liz Busque. “We did 100 good deeds in the beginning of the year, so each troop was doing 100 good deeds. Our next project will be collecting 100 non-perishable food items. Each troop will be doing that, and we have approximately 35 troops.”
On Monday, Girl Scout Service Centers throughout Greater Los Angeles, including Arcadia (626.677.2200) and Montclair (909.399.0808), are open to the public, where you can enjoy some free birthday cake and hear about more activities the girls have planned for their second centennial of service.
