As usual, the undefeated White Sox in the American League Division of the La Verne Little League saved its best for last, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to defeat the upset-minded Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday night at Pelota Park.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the fifth, the White Sox were six outs away from dropping their first game of the year, but that quickly changed when Nick Lodolo hit a lead-off, line-drive home run over the left-centerfield fence to knot the score at 3-3.

The blast ignited the rest of his White Sox teammates. Cole Sojka walked. Will Guerra followed with a perfectly placed bunt and ended up on second when the ball was mishandled. Andrew Berdugo singled in Sojka and and Logan Zylstra grounded out to drive in Guerra. After Shane Lohr and Pete Adame walked to load the bases, Adrian Bejarano laid down the inning’s second bunt to score Berdugo in a close play at the plate.

Leading 6-3 in the top of the sixth, the White Sox added another run to go up 7-3 when Sojka led off with a single and eventually came around to score on a steal of home when the Cardinals elected to throw down to second in an unsuccessful attempt to erase the stealing Berdugo.

In addition to Lodolo’s fifth inning homer, leading the White Sox attack were Guerra, Zylstra and Bejarano, who each collected a pair of hits.

The Cardinals, who welcomed back Sam Monsen, one of team’s top players who had been out with an injury, battled from the start.

They got on the board in the first after Chris Spencer singled and came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Cardinals took the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a walk to Taylor Trujillo, a double by Joe De Fina, a RBI ground out by Neemo Nunez and a one-run single by Derrick Borunda.

In the bottom of the sixth Nunez doubled home De Fina for the Cardinals final run to make the score 7-4.

The Cardinals collected five hits, including a pair by De Fina. Meanwhile, the White Sox had a dozen hits.

The undefeated White Sox have two games remaining on their regular season schedule. They square off next against the Dodgers this Saturday at 9 a.m. on Field 1. The Cardinals will be back in action this Saturday at 6 p.m. to face the Angels.

Thanks for the props on Joe De Fina. Just wanted to mention his last name is spelled De Fina not Defino. Happpens quite often.

Thanks again for the great story. Looking forward to the next one.

  2. Great to see an article about the boys…they love the game and it’s good for them to see something written about all their hard work. Thank you so much. GO CARDINALS !!!!!
