Supposed to be on holiday, but the news never stops …
Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 — Bonita High School (11-2) has reached the quarterfinals of the Century Tournament with its 49-34 win over Rowland on Monday night in Covina. With the victory, the Bearcats will play third-seeded Bishop Amat, a 70-48 winner over Los Altos, in a semifinal matchup at 8:30 p.m. tonight.
Meanwhile, the Bonita Girls’ Varsity basketball team has stretched their undefeated record to 12-0 with their latest 54-25 win over Diamond Bar in the Rowland tournament. Scoring leaders for the Bearcats were Madison Zylstra, with 14, and Taylor Anderson with 12.
The San Gabriel Valley Tribune named its All-Area Girls Tennis Team, and while the Bearcats didn’t land anyone on the first team, doubles partners Megan Rasmussen, a sophomore, and Sharaya Grattan, a junior, made the second team squad.
The awards season kicked in high gear for football as well with the SGVT naming its 2009 All-Area Team on Saturday, Dec. 26. Bonita had two second-team selections, defensive back Garrett Horine, a sophomore, and senior punter, Evan Highley. Gaining honorable mention accolades were Tyler Cortez, Kylan Haynes and Deron Holmes.
On Thursday, Dec. 24, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune named its All-Area Girls Volleyball Team. Player of the Year honors went to Bonita Senior Allie LaPierre, who is headed for UCLA in the fall to continue her strong play. On the season, LaPierre had 426 kills to earn first-team All-CIF SS Division 3 and All-Miramonte League honors. She also is on www.Prepvolleyball.com’s Top 100 seniors. Also on the First Team from Bonita was junior setter Ashley Maxfeldt. Earlier, Maxfeldt had earned co-MVP honors in Division 3 and was named MVP of the Miramonte League. She had 905 assists to go along with 114 kills.
On Christmas Day, two Bonita seniors, Alec Williams and Brandon Parlopino, got to wake up to the joyful news that they had both been selected to the SGVT’s All-Area Boys Water Polo Team. Bonita rode the duo to another Miramonte League title and a trip to the Division 5 quarterfinals. Williams was league MVP and first-team All-CIF-SS in the division while Parlopino was first-team All-League.
