Bonita’s Jiovanni Mier, the Houston Astros No. 1 pick and the No. 21 Major League Baseball draft choice overall, has reportedly signed a $1.358-million signing bonus.

“We finally came to a deal,” Mier told MLB.com. “I’m glad we came to a conclusion and my (agents) got it done. I’m trying to get out there and play.”

Until the decision was announced, the 6-foot-2 Mier who batted .394 with 10 doubles, five homes and 18 RBIs in leading the Bearcats to the Miramonte League title and Division III quarterfinals, was taking infield practice and hitting in the batting cages at Bonita High School to stay sharp and game-ready.

Mier’s decision to sign with the Astros means he will forgo his verbal agreement to play at the University of Southern California. When Mier first heard that he was selected by the Astros, he was wearing a USC sweatshirt.

  1. Excellent! Jio is a class act and if anyone deserved this and earned this, it was Mier. Thanks for the update Pete and best of luck to Jio.
