Mark Levy, owner of Palace Pet Salon in La Verne, has a lot to howl about.

His business has been selected the La Verne Chamber of Commerce “Business of the Year” for 2011/12.

A little more than five years ago, Levy purchased the business from K9 Carousel, regally renamed it “Palace Pet Salon,” and joined the local chamber to put some bite back in the business.

Hardly a ribbon-cutting or grand opening occurs in town without Levy emceeing the event. Moreover, he sits on the Chamber board and has chaired the Chamber’s ambassadors, as well.

“Whatever you put into the chamber, you take out, and then some,” Levy said. “I would say my connection with the chamber has been the biggest plus for my business. It allows me to get out into the community.”

Levy also has made a few wise business decisions since he first swung open the palace’s doors. About 18 months ago, he introduced “Splash and Dash” for dogs, a brushing and bathing service that owners could use as much as they want for one monthly fee. More than 300 dog owners have subscribed to the service.

Also, on the last Tuesday of every month, Palace Pet Salon offers anesthesia-free dental cleaning for dogs.
“People don’t realize that teeth-cleaning can extend a dog’s life by at least five years,” Levy claimed. “More dogs die from teeth decay than people realize.”

Palace Pet Salon is also extremely convenient for customers. It seems to stay open longer than some Vegas casinos.
It opens at 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at 9 a.m. on Sunday. “We’re family here,” Levy said. “We’re always here for our kids.”

When you add a great staff to convenient hours, you begin to see why Palace Pet Salon was an easy choice as the Chamber’s Business of the Year.

Will it be able to repeat for 2012-2013?

“We’ll think of something,” Levy said. “That’s the challenge of business. We’re always trying to make ourselves better and more relevant for our customers.”
