Just when you think the next generation is going to you know where in a hand basket, we hear the incredible news of a remarkable student whose selfless action should give us all a reason to smile broadly.

Megan Hakopian, a 9-year-old, 4th grade student at Oak Mesa, has donated $310 to David & Margaret Youth & Family Services in La Verne from the sales she made at her lemonade stand.

She donated $138 in 2010 and $172 in 2011.

I don’t know about you, but when I was a kid and had a lemonade stand I pocketed the cash I made or went out and bought candy or baseball cards with it.

But Megan isn’t your average kid. She was originally going to donate the money to her father Andy’s wife’s favorite charity, but when she learned her family already made donations to that organization, she set her sights elsewhere.

“She had heard me frequently talk about David & Margaret and had been to the campus there on an Easter egg hunt,” said proud father Andy. “So she changed her mind and decided to donate her sales to David & Margaret.

How could a 9 year old come up with that much cash?

It turns out she had quite a lemonade stand. It was so impressive that the people at Hot Dog on a Stick are probably scoping her out. Megan’s grandfather built it, using 4-by-4-foot pillars and 5-inch thick plywood for the roof and counter. Not even a September Santa Ana gust could have blown the stand over.

“We painted the front board, wrote on it and set up shop,” said Andy, who owns Netsmart System, Inc. in La Verne.

Megan plans to be back next year.

“She wants to keep this going,” Andy added, “and perhaps a recruit a couple of her friends next year to do a full promotion and raise even more funds.”

The line for her special lemon-aid is already forming!
