DOUGH WARS: Whether You Spell Them ‘Doughnuts’ or ‘Donuts’, La Verne Serves Them by the Dozen

Joe Cahill hopes that 5-year-old David Cline’s mother never sees this picture of her son eating a sugar doughnut and washing it down with an A&W root beer, but, hey, that’s what grand-parenting is all about, spoiling your grandchildren. Photo was taken outside Miss Donut and Bagel in downtown La Verne. Grandfather Joe and grandson David had pedaled 10 miles before taking a delicious doughnut break.

LA VERNE, California, September 15, 2015 — For some reason, no doughnut chain has invaded La Verne. You will not find a Dunkin’ Donuts, Winchell’s or Krispy Kreme in sight.

Nor do we boast any trendy one-offs like The Donut Man in Glendora, or Donut Friend in Highland Park or Cofax on Fairfax in Los Angeles. You won’t find our doughnut shops on the Food Channel’s Top 10 countdown of best doughnut shops in the U.S.A.

Yet our single doughnut shop purveyors know how to twist, fry, frost and glaze their doughy delights with the best of them.

Gloria and Tomas Martinez favor Tastee’s Donut and Bagel in La Verne in the Heritage Shopping Center. “Even when there is a line, they are organized,” Tomas said. “They are very fast, and they remember who you are.”

Unlike cities and sections farther west of La Verne that don’t even blush at charging as much as $6.50 for a single donut, La Verne’s donut denizens seem to charge about 90 cents a doughnut or $9 for a dozen. Interestingly, at Miss Donut & Bagel in downtown La Verne, you pay only $7.95 if the clerk picks them, but $9.25, if you pick them out. I guess the owners, who understand that time really is money, don’t want you holding up the line while you’re trying to decide whether the last doughnut in your Pepto Bismol-colored box is going to be a chocolate bar or a maple bar.

My only real complaint about the La Verne doughnut scene is the confusion about the name “Miss Donut and Bagel.” There is one downtown at D and Bonita and another at 2369 on Foothill Blvd. The two shops have separate owners. The downtown store came first.

Other than that quibble, what’s to complain about. Let’s celebrate more doughnuts and the people who eat and serve them:

Service always comes with a smile at Miss Donut and Bagel in downtown La Verne.

Grand Donuts bring their “A” game (see window) to the Oak Tree Plaza in La Verne.

Jennifer runs the show at Miss Donut and Bagel on a Foothill Blvd., where she says they use only the finest ingredients. “We’re really friendly, too,” she added.

Shane Harvey went for a half-dozen at Tastee’s on a Friday morning.

Every day, you can find members of the Men’s Social Group & Therapy Session at Miss Donut and Bagel on Foothill Blvd. The group was founded by the inimitable Bob Rogers in 2007 and has been running on good coffee, doughnuts and friendship ever since. Enjoying their time at the “office” on Friday are, from left, Jerry, Ed, Keith, and Dan. Quentin was called to run an errand and missed the photo.
