As far as ribbon cuttings go, this one literally went up in smoke.
After partners Brian Cooper and Eric Wanland cut the ribbon on their new venture, with a handful of well-wishers and local business and government representatives cheering them on, they headed inside to the humidor to pick out their favorite cigars — not an easy task considering Lordsburg Cigar Company sells more than 200 varieties.
Several of their customers were well ahead of them, however, contentedly puffing on their cigars while sitting in comfortable overstuffed leather chairs and couches while watching the Dodgers duel the Diamondbacks on HD TVs.
“This is the ultimate man cave,” said Wanland. “It’s a place to stretch out, kick up your feet and relax.”
Many Lordsburg Cigar patrons store the stogies in rented lockers ($30 a month or $300 for the year). With cigars priced from $5 to $30 on average, you can see why they prefer to have these valuables under lock and key.
Although everyone was lighting up, the smoke didn’t hang heavy in the air. Lordsburg Cigar boasts industrial-strength ventilators that would be the envy of major five-star restaurants. The interior is also modern and open, unlike some cigar retreats that go overboard on the walnut paneling.
The huge, walk-in humidor, where the tobacco treasures are tucked away in constant 70-degree temperature and 70-percent humidity, is where the real action takes place, with customers eying cigars offerings from around the world.
There’s a second lounge in the back, with cool drinks and espressos to enjoy. The walls feature photos by Cooper’s father-in-law, Peter Torres, and, of course, an obligatory bigger-than-life photo of, perhaps, the world’s most-famous cigar-chomping potentate, Winston Churchill, who went through an average of eight to 10 sticks a day and stockpiled thousands more for his use.
Indeed, the Lordsburg Cigar Company looks like it’s going to be a fun place to hang out and unwind with friends … and we’re not just blowing smoke.
The Lordsburg Cigar Company, managed by Mike Manning, is located at 1249 Foothill Blvd. in La Verne.
