La Verne Little League welcomed the start of its 60th season under beautiful blue skies on March 16, while showcasing an emerald green infield, starch-white championship banners fluttering over the snack bar, a ring of palm trees standing like sentries over the outfield and an overflow crowd of proud players, parents, relatives and friends ready to hear League President Brian Shively yell “Play ball.”

Never were the players’ uniforms whiter, as they were absent the tears and grass stains that invariably will come as the season unwinds.

Smiles also were in great abundance, partly because every team was in first place.

Opening day festivities began at 8:30 a.m. with the traditional 10-minute walk from Kuns Park to Pelota Park. Players and their coaches filed onto the field forming a great semicircle at the edge of the infield.

President Brian Shively introduced all the teams, from the junior 13-14-year-old division to the mightiest tee ballers. Helping share in the celebration were the La Verne City Council, participating vendors and raffle winners who were lucky enough to be called out to throw out the ceremonial first pitches.

With the formalities over and the fields never looking better, Shively said it was time to play ball. With that, the 60th season got off to a wonderful start.
