Memo to Bonita Coach Greg Eckler: Coming off an undefeated season, the 8th grade basketball team from Ramona Middle School in La Verne is loaded with talent, and, according to head coach Cory Hanson, the entire roster is heading to Bonita.

That talent was on display Thursday at Sandburg Middle School in Glendora, where the Vikings annihilated the Spartans 79-36. From the opening tip, there was absolutely no stopping Ramona, which led 18-2 after the first quarter and 37-6 at the half.

“It’s been amazing to be honest with you,” Hanson said moments after the contest. “They have great talent, the guys all work together. No one is selfish. The kids have a great work ethic. It’s just been a great season. I was handed a good team.”

Responsible for Ramona’s dream season were BJ McLauren, Sean Dennis, Romeo Gutierrez, Mashood Abrahim, Russell Hernandez, Caleb Ting, Nathan Huang, Dillian Franco, Josh Peifer, Anthony Cascarano, Corbin O’Laughlin, Tyler Poepping and Jordan Hoff.

Meanwhile, Hanson can anticipate another fantastic season next year, with the 7th grade teach led by Coach Soto also turning in a perfect season. On a gusty outside court, the 7th graders won a nail-biter, 44-40 on the Spartans’ home court.

With the three La Verne high school teams (Bonita, Lutheran and Damien) all winning first-round CIF playoff games), La Verne basketball is on fire right now and appears to be in fine shape for years to come.

Soto's Supermen: The 7th graders held up their end of the bargain, also completing a perfect season.
