Bonita’s loss of football star Tarez Lemmons will be the University of San Diego’s gain after the dominant three-year varsity offensive and defensive lineman signed his letter of intent on Wednesday to play for the Toreros next fall.
Meanwhile, Bonita senior Heather Jackson also signed with Utah Valley University, where she will continue her stellar cross country career.
“Any time you have your athletes receive college scholarships is a cause for celebration,” said Bonita girls’ basketball coach Darren Baumunk who was pinch-hitting for Athletic Director Eric Podley.
Last week Lemmons visited the University of San Diego campus and walked away impressed.
“The Spanish architecture and the location overlooking Mission Bay, it’s just beautiful,” said Lemmons. “The top three things I want to do in college is get my medical degree, play football and have a great time, and I get all those three at the University of San Diego.”
Maybe he should go directly to work for the school’s marketing department.
His offensive line coach, Josh Koepfer said the University has found a great prospect in Lemmons. “I think San Diego is very fortunate to have him,” Koepfer said. “He won’t take his success for granted. It will be very exciting to him play on Saturdays.”
Cross country Coach Lonnie Carr, who was also on hand at the signing, will find it equally hard to say goodbye to his talented runner, a four-year varsity performer who gave Bonita one of the most talented harrier teams in the valley.
“Heather has worked very hard,” Carr said. “I think in her new environment, she’ll be able to really focus and excel. She’s going to love it. I’m excited for her and her parents. She’s very deserving.
Bonita’s tradition of scholar athletes continues.
