On Monday night, the Minor Division National League All-Stars edged the American League All-Stars 5-3 in a well-played game before a packed house at Pelota Park in La Verne.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the National League strung together five singles for three runs to go up 5-2. Stroking singles in sixth for the Nationals were Max Siegel, Tyler Corthell, Chase Siffert, Adrian Hernandez and Luc Peifer.
The Americans mounted a comeback in the top of the eighth, when Sean Powell, who had singled, came around to score on a force out by Steve Vasquez, making the score 5-3 before the Nationals’ Tyler Corthell closed the door.
The Nationals collected the game’s first run in the bottom of the first. Peifer banged a two-out single and came around to score on a one-run single by Tyson Heaton. The Nationals might have scored more in the inning, but the Americans turned a fine double play earlier in the inning to erase Siffert and Hernandez from the bases.
The Americans got the offense going in the top of the second. Ben D’Aquila blasted a one-out double and came into score when Jake Aguirre tapped back to the pitcher. Joseph Garcia also singled with two outs, but he was caught in a rundown trying to stretch his his gap-hit into a double.
The Americans struck again in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, stringing singles together by Cody Moderow, Trevor Caton and Sean Powell.
However, the Nationals knotted the score in the bottom of the fifth. After Leonardo Flores singled, Nick Henderson doubled, putting runners on second and third. When Ethan Valore hit back to the box, Flores scored to tie the game at 2-2.
In their next at-bats in the bottom of the sixth, the Nationals erupted for three more runs to give them a comfortable 5-2 lead and final 5-3 victory.
The pitching was exceptional for both sides. Cody Moderow started for the Americans and Stephen Bustos took the hill for the Nationals to start the game. In the seventh inning the American’s Erick Esparza struck out the side and his teammate Sean Powell followed suit in the eighth. Meanwhile, the Nationals Tyson Heaton retired the Americans in order in the top of the ninth to close out the game and earn the save.
There were several fine defensive gems turned in as well, including a great catch by the Nationals’ Tyler Cothrell to rob Sean Powel of extra bases in the first.
Tonight, all La Verne Little Leaguers are invited to return to Pelota Park, where the League’s all-star teams will be announced. Festivities begin at 6 p.m.
