Mayor Curt Morris and Councilmen Emmett Badar will speak to Holy Name of Mary School students on Monday, February 1, 2010 at 7:50 a.m. Mayor Curt Morris will concentrate on the value of volunteerism in the community. Councilmen Emmett Badar will speak about how city government works and how good education and good citizenship are connected. Mayor Curt Morris is the Mayor of San Dimas since 1996. Emmett Badar has been on the San Dimas City Council since 2007. The assembly will last a total of thirty minutes and is a part of the Catholic Schools Week celebration at Holy Name of Mary. This year’s theme, “Catholic Schools: Dividends for Life,” underscores the commitment of schools like Holy Name of Mary to offer the foundation in faith, knowledge, morals, and discipline that prepares students for successful lives. The events are part of a nation-wide celebration of Catholic education that lasts from January 31 to February 6.
On Sunday, January 31, the celebration will kick off with a mass, promoting “Dividends for Life: in Our Parish”. Students will sing in the choir and be greeters, altar servers, and lectors at the 10 a.m Mass.
Monday, February 1, is dedicated to “Dividends for Life: In Our Community”, beginning with the morning assembly, in which Mayor Curt Morris and Councilmen Emmett Badar will speak. Students will learn about community service, government, education, and citizenship. Students will participate in Pennies for Patients program, by raising funds to help cure leukemia and other blood-related cancers, donating spare change to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. At 11 a.m., the students will be treated to an animal magic show on the basketball courts.
“Dividends for Life: In Our Students” is the theme on Tuesday, February 2. This day is devoted to the students, who get to wear Cozy, Comfy Pajamas to school. They will play board games, have an ice cream social, and be dismissed early for the day. An Open House will take place from 7-8:30 p.m. , where refreshments will be served, 4th grade mission projects will be on display in the Pavilion, an Art Fair will be in the Junior Building , and the Science Fair will be in the Senior Building . An information session for prospective new families will be at 7:30 in Room 5.
Wednesday, February 3 is National Appreciation Day for Catholic Schools, and is themed “Dividends for Life: In Our Nation and in Our Faculty and Staff”. Holy Name of Mary will honor the teachers who devote their careers to teaching students and infusing them with the faith, knowledge, morals and disciple that are the hallmarks of Catholic Education. The Cub Scouts will do a flag ceremony at the morning assembly. Students will be able to wear red, white, and blue to school if they bring in a $1.00 donation to the American Red Cross. There will be a staff appreciation luncheon and a Rosary Prayer service.
“Dividends for Life: In Our Vocations” will be the emphasis on Thursday, February 4. Students will explore the many ways people can serve God. Students will “Dress to Express”, dressing as professionals to see what the future might feel like. Adult volunteers will visit classes to talk about their jobs. Fr. Martin O’Loghlen will talk with the children about the ways people can serve God and the church.
Catholic Schools Week closes with Special Persons Day on Friday, February 5. Students will invite a special person to come to school with them. This will be a non-uniform day for the students. A Welcome Reception will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the 8:30 mass in the church. Students will perform for our guests in our Field of Angels at 9:30 a.m. The special persons will visit the classrooms and have lunch and games with the students.
A Book Fair will also be offered to the students and families for the duration of the week.
